How to move your online store without losing subscribers
Subscribers are the most valuable customers a store has, and a platform move is the easiest time to lose them. The new store can look perfect and still drop every saved card, every renewal date and every login on launch day.
It doesn't have to go that way. In October 2025, Instinct moved VetCBD off an outdated WooCommerce store and its built-in subscriptions onto Shopify with a dedicated subscription app. For subscribers the move was invisible. Nearly every one came across, nobody had to do anything or re-enter a card, and 9,808 orders of customer history going back to 2019 came along. Today the store brings in $25,000 a month in subscription revenue from 741 active subscribers.
Here is the order of work that makes that possible.
The eight steps, in order
1. Count what you have before you touch anything
Export every active, paused and failed subscription. For each one, note the product, price, discount, billing interval and next charge date. This list is how you prove nothing went missing at the end.
2. Sort out the saved cards first
This is the step that loses most subscribers. Card numbers never leave your payment processor, so they can't be exported in a spreadsheet. If the new store uses the same processor account, the saved cards can usually carry over. If it doesn't, ask the processor for a card migration early, because it can take a few weeks. Without one, every subscriber has to re-enter a card, and many won't.
3. Rebuild the subscriptions, not just the products
Each subscription is a small contract: who pays, for what, how often and when next. Import those contracts into the new subscription app with the same next charge dates and the same prices. Keep anyone on an old price on that price. A surprise increase during a move reads as a reason to cancel.
4. Bring the customer history across
Order history keeps reorders, reviews and support working. Passwords can't be moved, so plan an "activate your account" email instead of letting customers find a login that no longer works.
5. Redirect every old address
Point every old product, category and account page to its new address. That protects search rankings, and it keeps the links in years of old order emails working.
6. Tell subscribers before and after
Send one short email before the move: what changes, the date, and whether they need to do anything. Send another after: the new account link, and who to contact. Silence is what turns a moved subscription into a support ticket or a cancellation.
7. Pick a quiet cutover day
Move between billing runs, not on the day most renewals charge. Switch off billing on the old store at the moment the new one takes over, so nobody is charged twice.
8. Watch the first two billing cycles
Compare the new store's renewals against the list from step 1. Check failed payments, double charges and cancellations every day for the first two cycles, and fix each one by hand while the list is small.
Checklist
- Export every subscription with its price, interval and next charge date
- Confirm how saved cards move (same processor, or a card migration request)
- Import subscription contracts with the same dates and prices
- Import customers and order history; plan the account activation email
- Redirect every old URL
- Email subscribers before and after the move
- Cut over between billing runs and turn off old billing
- Reconcile renewals against the export for two billing cycles
Common questions
Will my subscribers have to re-enter their cards?
Not if the saved cards can carry over through your payment processor. Settle that first, before you pick a launch date.
How long does a move like this take?
It depends on the size of the catalog and the subscriber list. The card migration is usually what sets the pace, so it starts first.
Does Instinct do this?
Yes. Store moves are the Replatform package, and subscriptions are included. On a Launch store, subscriptions are a $1,500 add-on.
Planning a move?
Book a 20-minute video call. Instinct will look at your current store first, and you'll leave knowing what the move involves, what it costs and when it can be live.
